United Airlines provides a full refund on all kinds of tickets including the lower cost, basic economy seats. If you cancel the tickets within 24 hours of the ticket being issued or at least before one week. In some cases, the ticket gets canceled because of unwanted events such as the death of the passenger or a family member, court summons, and other medical problems related documents such as a death certificate, court summon/ letter, or a medical certificate from an authorized doctor.

Note: after 24 hours if you cancel the basic economy ticket, United Airlines doesn’t provide either a refund or a flight credit.

Well, you can claim some money back, by adding United economy benefits to a basic economy ticket. There is a benefit if you change your basic economy ticket to a standard economy fare, you will be able to receive future flight credit. In the report of the U.S. Department of Transportation, passengers will get a full refund if the flight is canceled on their own.

Despite everything, if you don’t travel on another flight available to passengers by United Airlines, you can claim a refund within 7 working days for credit cards and within 20 days if you booked by cash or check. In case you didn’t get a full refund, future flight credit is provided to passengers but there is a limit regarding travel credit as it expires after 1 year it was issued.
